Pennsylvania Avenue Bridge Update 12/18/18

Winter weather delays completion of new bridge

Tuesday, December 18, 2018

King of Prussia, PA – The scheduled completion of the new bridge carrying Pennsylvania Avenue (Route 2027) over Sandy Run in Springfield Township, Montgomery County, has been delayed until mid-to-late January 2019. Cold weather conditions on the work site has adversely impacted the construction schedule.  The bridge is currently under construction as part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Rapid Bridge Replacement Project and had previously been expected to be complete in late December 2018.

Vehicular traffic – including cars, small trucks, school buses and emergency vehicles – will be maintained in both directions on a temporary bridge until the new bridge is complete.   Oversized tractor trailers will follow a truck detour around Pennsylvania Avenue by way of Easton Road, Jenkintown Road (Route 2021), Route 152 (Limekiln Pike), Susquehanna Road (Route 2017), Virginia Drive (Route 2024), Delaware Drive and Commerce Drive.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because slowdowns will occur.

The Pennsylvania Avenue bridge averages over 12,800 daily vehicles. Built in 1927, the single-span concrete, T-beam bridge will be replaced with a new single-span box beam bridge.

In the event of unfavorable weather or unforeseen activities, this schedule may still change.

This bridge is referred to as JV-217 and is one out of the 558 bridges being replaced under the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project. JV references the joint-venture partnership between Walsh/Granite, which is leading construction for the entire project.

The Rapid Bridge Replacement Project is a public-private partnership (P3) between PennDOT and Plenary Walsh Keystone Partners (PWKP), under which PWKP will finance, design, replace, and maintain the bridges for 25 years.

More on P3 in Pennsylvania is available at or "Public-Private Partnerships" at Information on the bridges and their status is at, or by calling the project hotline at 877-444-9990 or email
