Update 3

As the number of COVID-19 cases and subsequent deaths caused by the virus continues to rise throughout the region and especially in Springfield Township, numerous residents have expressed renewed concern over the health and safety of our community.

Please be advised that as of 3:00 PM on Friday, May 1, 2020 there was a reported total of 362 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Springfield Township including 54 reported deaths. Of those figures, 70% of all remaining active cases (308) have been reported in residents age 60 and older. Children and young adults age 0 through 29 remain the least impacted age group comprising only 3.9% or 14 cases of all active COVID-19 afflictions in the Township at this time.  Of the reported deaths, 89% or 48 or the total 54 deaths experienced by our community thus far can be attributed to individuals ages 70 and above.

Although these numbers are tragic, the community should not be alarmed that the Township’s case count continues to increase, as this is a result of more people being tested and not necessarily an indicator of a surge of new cases. Additionally, an overwhelming majority of the confirmed cases and deaths in the Township are associated with local long-term care (LTC) facilities.  Officials from the County Health Department visited several LTC locations in the Township and were pleased with the operations and the protocols that were in place at each facility.  Township and County staff will continue to monitor and work with local LTC facilities to ensure the well-being of our entire community.

The Township remains vigilant in its strict adherence and enforcement of guidelines implemented to fight the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Residents can rest assured that we are continuing to work with State, County, and other local Officials to act swiftly to safeguard the health and safety of the public. We encourage any member of the public in need to information or guidance to visit the Township’s dedicated COVID-19 Resources page on our website (https://www.springfieldmontco.org/information/covid-19-resources/).

Stay safe and be sure to check in on your friends and family in a manner compliant with social distancing guidelines. These are certainly troubling times, but if we all do our part, we can help bring an end to this pandemic as quickly as possible.
