A new school year is set to commence and we want to take this time to remind everyone of the importance of getting there safely! As students, staff, and families travel to and from school each day, pedestrian safety remains a top priority for our community. Whether it's crossing busy intersections or navigating school zones, taking simple precautions can help prevent accidents and keep everyone safe.

Here’s how we can all be safe walkers:

  • Always use designated crosswalks and follow crossing signals.
  • Walk across the street in a straight line so drivers can predict your movement. Never run into or across the street!
  • Stay alert- avoid texting and wearing headphones while walking.
  • Look LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT before crossing the street and make eye contact with drivers. Be safe, be seen.
  • Another way to be safe and be seen is to wear bright colors or reflectors and use flashlights when it's dark so that drivers can easily see you.
  • Walk on sidewalks whenever possible and be cautious of driveways. If sidewalks aren't available, always walk on the left side of the street and make eye contact with drivers.
  • Parents and caregivers can be a role model to their children by talking to them about pedestrian safety. Aways follow traffic signs and signals, use crosswalks and sidewalks and never jaywalk.

Here's how motorists can be safer drivers:

  • Slow down! Be especially alert in residential neighborhoods.
  • Take extra time to look for children at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
  • Enter and exit driveways and alleyways slowly and carefully.
  • Watch for children on or near the roads during daytime hours.
  • Remember that children may move in unpredictable ways.
  • Reduce distractions in your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.

Let's work together to promote a safe, respectful walking environment. Safe steps lead to safe schools!
