As of tomorrow, federal funding for SNAP benefits will halt until a federal budget deal is reached, meaning many families in our township, county, and across Pennsylvania will face a gap in food assistance.
What's going on:
- The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) has confirmed that SNAP benefits scheduled for this month will not be paid until federal funding is restored.
- Households that rely on SNAP may still have funds loaded on their EBT cards from previous months, and these can still be used.
- In normal months, SNAP plays a vital role in ensuring families can put food on the table and that local food pantries aren’t overburdened. With the halt, demand on local food resources is expected to rise.
What this means for our community:
- Families that were counting on SNAP dollars will now need to rely more on other supports — local food cupboards, community agencies, friends/neighbors stepping up.
- Those of us in the community who are able can make a difference by donating, volunteering or simply being an extra pair of eyes/ears for our neighbors in need.
- Food pantries are preparing for increased demand. Your help can make sure no neighbor in Springfield Township goes without.
How you can help your neighbors:
- Donate non-perishable foods / grocery gift cards — Consider dropping items at our upcoming Pop-Up Pantry (details below) or bringing them to other local food banks.
- Volunteer time or resources — Even short stints helping at a pantry or transporting goods make a big difference.
- Check in with neighbors — Especially older residents, folks with disabilities, or families with children who may not have immediate access to other supports. A friendly wave, a phone call, or a note can help.
- Share information — Many residents may not realize this funding gap. Let people know about other sources of support: calling 2-1-1, visiting FeedingPA.org, or using PANavigate to find nearby food assistance.
Springfield Township School District has also created a helpful, comprehensive resource guide highlighting local food assistance programs, community meal sites, and other ways to combat hunger close to home. We encourage all residents to explore and share this guide. It’s an extremely valuable tool for anyone looking for support or hoping to help a neighbor in need. Check out their guide here.
Our local event- Come join us!
We're pleased to announce that Springfield Township Commissioner, Susanna Ratsavong, will be hosting a Pop-Up Pantry next Thursday, November 6th at the Free Library of Springfield Township. This will be an excellent opportunity for neighbors to come together, share what they can, and support one another during a challenging time.
From November 3rd until November 6th, residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items or grocery store gift cards at the Springfield Township Administration Building (1510 Paper Mill Road) during normal business hours. Three days of generous giving will culminate in an evening of community care and camaraderie with a Pop-Up Pantry. Donations will be set up market-style for anyone who could use a little extra help this season. No questions, no pressure- just neighbors helping neighbors.
Excess donations will be donated to Springfield Township School District and the Mattie N. Dixon Community Cupboard.
There will be food and drink supplied by local businesses to enjoy as well as information on other local resources and initiatives aiming to alleviate some pressure during these difficult times.

Even in challenging moments like this, what makes Springfield Township strong is how we look out for each other. If you ever see a neighbor who could use a hand, offer one. If you have the means to donate or volunteer, your effort will go a long way. Together, we can ensure no one in our community is left behind.
Thank you for being part of this caring community.
