Springfield Township will celebrate the completion of a new municipal solar installation with a ribbon cutting and public solar education event on Wednesday, August 19th at 9:30 a.m. at the Springfield Township Administration Building, 1510 Paper Mill Road, Wyndmoor. The celebration is scheduled as Part of Philadelphia Energy Authority's Solar Week, spanning August 17-21, to showcase a successful solar project in the Greater Philadelphia region.
Township Commissioners, staff, project partners, members of the Environmental Advisory Commission, and residents are invited to attend as Springfield Township marks a major milestone in its commitment to sustainability, fiscal responsibility, and clean energy! During the event, Montgomery County Commissioner Jamila Winder and Chief Sustainability Officer Devi Ramkissoon will present Springfield Township with a $250,000 Montco 2040 Implementation Grant awarded through the Montgomery County Planning Commission in support of the project.
This project comprises two solar energy systems including 887 solar panels with a total solar capacity of 390 kilowatts (kW), installed on the Springfield Township Police/Administration Building and Public Works Facility rooftops. The $629,125 project will power both these facilities, as well as the Free Library of Springfield Township through virtual meter aggregation with excess solar generation from the Public Works Facility. Once operational, the two systems are expected to generate approximately 456,273 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually, supplying about 89% of the Township's annual municipal electricity use, significantly reducing long-term operating costs while increasing energy resilience.
All are also invited to attend Solar & You, a free public educational event from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Free Library of Springfield Township (8900 Hawthorne Lane, Wyndmoor). Representatives from the Philadelphia Energy Authority will provide information about the Solarize Greater Philadelphia program and will be joined by project partners and other groups to discuss the benefits of residential and commercial solar energy, available incentives, and financing opportunities.
